Olympian Andrew Gaze and his Team do their bit to Promote the Prevention of Diabetic Retinopathy
In response to an aging population the importance of addressing the causes of vision impairment is becoming more urgent.
The amount of visual impairment and blindness is shown to increase three fold with each decade of age.
The number of Australians who will become vision impaired or needlessly blind will double in the next twenty years.
The situation is made worse by inequalities in the provision of services and a lack of awareness of the services and treatments available.
The incidence and impact of vision loss can be reduced significantly particularly amongst high risk groups through increased awareness of:
- the need for regular eye examination
- early detection
- referral to appropriate services
One specific initiative addressing the above was the involvemnt of the Melbourne K Mart Tigers and Olympian Andrew Gaze in promoting awareness of diabetic retinopathy in the community.
