Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital (RVEEH)

Located in East Melbourne, RVEEH is the premier Specialist Teaching & Referral Hospital in Eye and Ear medicine in Australia, and has served the people of Victoria for over 135 years.


RVEEH performs over half the State's public Ophthalmology (eye surgery) workload and is the home and host of the world renowned Bionic Ear and Cochlear Implant Program.


RVEEH has a recognised international reputation and is one of about 20 renowned stand alone specialist hospitals in the fields of eye & ear medicine in the world.


In recent years, the Hospital has been actively developing satellite services in outer metropolitan population growth corridors of Melbourne to increase its accessibility. RVEEH currently has 3 satellite services in operation; a paediatric ear clinic in Blackburn at the Taralye Special School, and two Eye Surgery and Consultation services located at the Maroondah Hospital, Ringwood East and at Broadmeadows in the Broadmeadows Health Service.


RVEEH sees patients from all over Victoria and receives referrals from other Australian states and territories and internationally.


RVEEH admits 12,000 inpatients per annum, approximately 10,500 of whom require and undergo specialist surgery.


The Hospital's 24 hour per day Emergency Centre sees about 45,000 cases per year, whilst the comprehensive range of specialist outpatient clinics provided, attend to over 120,000 consultations per year. In many of its outpatient clinics, RVEEH is the sole provider in Victoria in terms of highly specialised services.


RVEEH is linked to world class medical research in both eye and ear medicine through its integrated association with the Melbourne University Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology which are housed at its East Melbourne site.


RVEEH undertakes the medical teaching and training in Ophthalmologist for all medical students in Victoria through and in conjunction with the University of Melbourne & Monash University Medical Schools.


The Hospital's specialist medical and surgical services are backed up by specialist trained nursing and allied health professionals.


RVEEH utilises advanced medical/diagnostic technology in the treatment and care of patients and actively seeks community support in the form of donations to foster its leading edge availability of the latest medical equipment.


Around half the practicing Ophthalmologists in Victoria have contractual appointments to the medical staff of the hospital hence fostering the excellent reputation of our facility.
